We have a lot of DJs making their way down to El Paso this Labor Day weekend to perform on one of our three stages for the return of Sun City Music Festival. Ascarate Park will soon be booming with the eclectic sounds of our lineup but before they rinse their catalog this September 3-4th, we’re highlighting some of the talents who move past the roles of selectors and producers to label owners. Buy your tickets today to be a part of the celebration!
The catalog for dance music productions is infinite but a great way to navigate the black hole is by following record labels. And when an artist or act you follow starts their own label, you can bank on falling in love with nearly every release they put out. From the curators, the tastemakers, and the genre purveyors, here are some of the artists on our 2016 SCMF lineup who are label owners as well.
Creative collective and record label OWSLA has accomplished a lot since it was founded by Skrillex back in 2011. Though the label’s first release was Porter Robinson’s Spitfire EP (which reached #1 one on Beatport’s overall charts, we might add), the mothership is now home to numerous well-respected names in the industry including AC Slater, DJ Sliink, Jack Ü, Kill the Noise, Vindata, What So Not and more.
Fedde Le Grand’s Flamingo Recordings
Dutch SCMF talent Fedde Le Grande co-founded Flamingo Recordings with Funkerman and Raf Jansen in 2004 and while both the imprint and Fedde have played a key role in the careers of talents like Nicky Romero, Deniz Koyu and Danny Avila, Flamingo has continued to stay committed to bringing emerging artists to light. Focusing on house, progressive house, electro house, and deep house, the label is responsible for to classic dance music anthems “Put Your Hands up For Detroit” and “Let Me Think About It.”
Gareth Emery’s Garuda
Starting Garuda in 2008, since then all of Gareth Emery’s records have been released through the imprint, the first being Exposure / Metropolis released in May 2009. Named after the bird-like creature from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, the label has released records by Ben Gold and Ashley Wallbridge and has also been host the occasional club nights with guests like Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, and Above & Beyond.
Joris Voorn’s Rejected
Joris Voorn co-founded Rejected in 2006 with Edwin Oosterwal alongside the launch of their producer outfit of the same namesake. In their own words, Rejected sets a high standard for quality dance floor tunes thanks in help to signing some of the most cutting edge names in contemporary house and techno like Nic Fanciulli, Deetron, and Carlo Lio.
Loco Dice’s Desolat Music
Düsseldorf-based label Desolat Music was born in the summer of 2007 when two friends Loco Dice and Martin Buttrich decided to create a platform to release music they like independently and do so very quickly. Since Dice and Buttrich both had long-standing careers in the dance music industry, it didn’t take long for the imprint to develop a reputation of being one of a discerning taste in the house and techno spectrum.
Sasha’s Last Night on Earth
Though he’s been a figurehead in the dance music industry since the 90s thanks to his dance floor sensibilities and exploration of beatless soundscapes, in 2011, Sasha carved a new way for himself when he launched the Last Night On Earth imprint. Using the platform as a way to support exciting new electronic music talent and his new solo productions, Sasha’s increasingly pivotal label has gone on to host forward-thinking producers like My Favourite Robot, Simon Baker, and Max Cooper.
Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings
Founded by our timeless talent, Josh Wink, for over 20 years Ovum Recordings has grown tremendously. Based out of Philadelphia, PA, the imprint prides itself on finding new names in dance music and creating well-crafted house and techno tunes that are a cut above the rest – a credo they’ve stood steadfast in since their inception in 1994.
